The Water Conservation Project is a partnership between Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority (ABCWUA) and Albuquerque Public Schools and entails the replacement of high flow toilets with low flow toilets throughout the district. While ABCWUA typically provides water bill rebates to encourage customers to retrofit high water use toilets with low flow toilets, this unique agreement with APS will appropriate the rebate through actual capital to offset the cost for retrofitting the toilets. At a rebate of $125 per toilet, the Water Authority's reimbursement to the APS Capital Program will total $527,000. As every toilet throughout the district's permanent buildings at all elementary, middle, high, and alternative schools will be replaced, the estimated savings is over 21 million gallons of water per year. And the 4,200 high flow toilets are not destined for waste, but rather will be recycled by Coronado Wrecking & Salvage. The Project was launched July 2008 and completion is expected by June 2010. APS is also installing only low flow toilets in all new schools and bathroom renovations. |
